CFMEU on warpath over ABCC powersDate: 27 June 2008
Is a trade unionist compelled to give evidence on what was said at a meeting of workers? Answer: yes. At least, if the building industry's watchdog, the ABCC, requests attendance. Those who don't show up face up to six months in jail. The CFMEU is up in arms over charges laid against a senior official who refused to front an ABCC hearing and the union wants the Commission's powers to be curtailed. This is tricky stuff for a federal Labor government, which has committed to keeping the ABCC until 2010. Listen to this ABC Radio National program where Dave Noonan from the CFMEU speaks...and John Lloyd of the ABCC also speaks. Click to Hear this Radio National program now
